COMMUNITY INITIATIVES and SOCIETY BENEFITS

PWA gives back throughout the year and takes pride in being able to do so.

  • PWA provides gift certificates to charitable causes
  • Host special events that promote community engagement outlining the cause that is being supported
  • Ensures inclusivity, participation is not always based on donating identifying that some may be limited in participating if funds are not readily available.
  • PWA supports low income assistance programs through recreation departments and children living in homes where finances may be a challenge creating a barrier to participation.
  • Summer Camps host weekly “fun days” that include a charitable component where kids learn the importance of “kids helping kids”.
  • PWA teaches that time on the ICE is a privilege not an expectation.

Special Events

Back in 2007 a friend of mind set forth on a journey to raise $5000 for cancer research after discovering a co-worker had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He achieved is goal in 3 weeks!   It made me stop to think about what we are blessed with being able to do and how we can share those talents and abilities with those needing a hand during a time of need.

I love kids… I love to coach… I contacted a friend of mine who has a passion to help others – especially children.  Together, Mena Westhaver of PowerWest Athletics & Reza Binab from the Victoria Grizzlies created the Grizzlies ‘Cub’ Fund.  The Grizzlies ‘Cub’ Fund is a project that supports local Victoria families stricken with the devastation of a child in their family becoming ill or injured. We want to help make the unfortunate journey they are enduring a little lighter.  We were able to help out many children and their families through difficult times and our first Cub Ella was presented a cheque of $5000.00 on December 30, 2007!

PowerWest Athletics is very proud of one of their favorite programs ~ Sole Sisters Victoria – a walk/run program for Women training for the 10k distance.   After the ‘birth’ of The Grizzlies Cub Fund in October 2007, Mena wanted to find a way to raise money for children living with a life-threatening illness off ice as well.  Motivated by women moving in the right direction, Quarters for Cubs was created!  Every walk or run achieved by a woman meant another quarter in the can!  The women moved for the kids while they were unable to do so.  Motivated to move for those that cannot… while we CAN!

We supported Cub Charlotte in 2009 – $2500 and today (2019) we celebrate that we have supported 30 children to date in total and over $30,000 in quarters!

However, in 2009 we never thought one of our own would be added to the list of “children living with a life-threatening illness”.  Our 3rd son Jack was diagnosed with ALL, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and would undergo 3 years and 4 months of treatment.  The support of our “friends at the rink” helped us on our road to recovery.  Enjoy this video clip from one of our TEAM JACK marathon relays where someone or a group of people would join me at every kilometer, each raising a minimum of $100.  Three TEAM JACK Marathons later, we raised over $25,000 by walking and running!

KidsRun Victoria was inspired by Jack… after spending hours, days and weeks at BC Children’s Hospital, we witnessed ChildRun ~ an event that supports children and families affected by a childhood cancer.  We soon realized that Victoria and Vancouver Island families, need more supported.  KidsRun would be mandated to do this.  Since 2010, 10 KidsRun Victoria events later, this event has raised over $164,000.  Together, we are determined to win the race and BEAT cancer to the finish line.
